Rivers we Fish
At Montana Trout Scouts , we guide anglers on three of Montana’s most iconic trout rivers — the legendary Yellowstone River, the scenic Madison River, and the world-class Missouri River. Each river offers a unique experience, and we tailor every trip to match the conditions and our guests’ skill levels. Whether we’re floating wide stretches of the Yellowstone, fishing the beautiful runs of the Madison, or casting on the clear waters of the Missouri, our goal is simple — provide a fun, relaxed, and memorable day on the water. We focus on helping anglers improve their skills, enjoy Montana’s incredible scenery, and make the most of every opportunity these rivers have to offer.

Madison River
The Madison River is one of Montana’s most famous and productive trout rivers. Flowing from Yellowstone National Park through the town of Ennis and into the Missouri River, it’s known for strong populations of wild rainbow and brown trout. The river offers a mix of fast riffles, deep runs, and classic boulder-strewn sections, making it exciting to fish throughout the season.
The Madison is popular for both float trips and walk-wade fishing, and it fishes well from spring through late fall. In summer, it’s well known for its dry fly action, while spring and fall can offer outstanding streamer and nymph fishing. With its beautiful mountain backdrop and consistent trout numbers, the Madison remains a bucket-list river for anglers visiting Montana.
Yellowstone River
The Yellowstone River is the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states and one of Montana’s true treasures. Flowing north out of Yellowstone National Park through Paradise Valley and Livingston, it offers miles of scenic, free-flowing trout water. The river is home to healthy populations of wild brown and rainbow trout and is especially known for its strong dry fly fishing during the summer months.
With wide gravel bars, sweeping bends, and beautiful mountain views, the Yellowstone is ideal for float fishing and covering productive water throughout the day. It fishes well from the end of spring runoff through fall and offers a classic Montana river experience — big skies, big water, and plenty of opportunity at quality wild trout.

Missouri River
The Missouri River is one of Montana’s most consistent and productive trout fisheries. Flowing below Holter Dam near Craig, it’s known for its clear water, steady flows, and impressive numbers of healthy rainbow and brown trout. The river offers long, gentle runs and gravel bars that create ideal conditions for anglers of all skill levels.
The Missouri fishes well throughout much of the year and is especially popular for its reliable hatches and steady action. Whether floating or wading, anglers can expect plenty of opportunities and beautiful open-country scenery. With its strong trout populations and dependable fishing, the Missouri is a must-visit river for anyone looking to experience some of the best fly fishing Montana has to offer.
